philosophy on integration of music and art
Coming from the Physical Education field, I understand the challenges behind a subject area not always getting the attention it deserves. It is most important to remember that the fine arts can make a huge contribution to the mental health of students of all ages. Schools need to teach more than just academics; they should also be teaching students how to be healthy and well-balanced human beings. The fine arts are paramount to this taking place. Music and art are outlets for students to express themselves just like physical activity can be.
Music and art are known to contribute to the learning of students in more ways than one. They contribute to higher order thinking and help students to express themselves in ways that are not always expected in schools. Within my classroom, I will often give students the option to show off their fine arts skills. Giving choice to students allows them to take control of their learning which helps to create intrinsic motivation.
Although there may not be enough hours in the school year to make music and art the priority they deserve to be, there are lots of great ways to integrate music and art so that students still are exposed to the wonder that are the fine arts, but they are also learning about more of the traditional subject matter. This way all essential learnings are still covered, but students also have the opportunity to expand their minds into the world of the fine arts.
